  • I also use the on-board virus protection as well as the really cool download station. It has many great applications and you can monitor the state of your disks. There is also an App Store of such which is also shown in the below screen shot. This allows me to set off downloads on a schedule overnight outside of my ISP’s contention hours and monitor their progress outside of the NAS itself using one of the phone applications. There are some major tools I use mainly the Download Manager. it offers a set of tools in a web browser like a desktop. The UI which Synology was using was an in house Linux developed one called DSM which is currently on release 4.1. This gave me around 5.8TB of resilient storage connected via 1gb Ethernet. I found the Synology DS-411J unpopulated. The reason I went for this is it was one of the cheapest 4 bay NAS servers on the market and also boasted the best UI and integration for my money. I populated this with 4 x Seagate 2TB hard disks in a RAID 5 configuration allowing for 1 disk failure and still not losing my data. Mainly because the cost of the high end NAS capable of the transcoding requirement of Plex was around £1000 I decided on the latter so I shopped around for a 4bay entry level NAS device. With Plex and its requirements you generally have two choices – get a top quality NAS/Datastore which can run the server client and save on the client side cost or get a cheaper NAS and then get some hardware to host the server and Client application.

    So I started looking at RAID configurations and found that I could run 4 disks with 1 disk being the backup in a RAID5 configuration. The one downside of this is that realistically I was looking at 3TB of data mirrored on two disks at a cost of around £500. It also allowed me to have two disks mirrored in one unit allowing for data backup. If I had 2TB of movies then I would need another 2TB disk to back up to which is doubling the cost.įrom there I started exploring the idea of a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) the good thing about this type of storage allows you to have it on the network for any device to access. However the one thing that I kept going back to was backing up that data. Originally I was looking at just getting a large USB HDD and if I filled that up I would just go bigger. The primary device I needed to get this to work was a piece of kit to store all the media on.
